Books and Open Access

Sixteen months ago, University of Michigan professor Don Herzog, the Edson R. Sunderland Professor of Law, published his latest book online in his institutional repository without going through an academic press.  Made freely available with a Creative Commons license that allows non-commercial use without permission,  Household Politics: Conflict in Early Modern England has been downloaded 1,600 times since it was deposited.  Even though the book has now been published in hardcover by Yale University Press, Professor Herzog negotiated his book contract to ensure that the book continued to be freely available online in his institutional repository.
